Secure Serial Console Servers (also known as “Serial-over-IP”
switches) support serial devices – those controlled through text-based,
serial console interfaces. A serial console server allows one user at a
serial console, or terminal, to access, control and manage multiple serial
devices.
A wide range of devices fall under the “serial” category.
These include networking switches and routers; firewalls; load balancers;
Network Attached Storage (NAS) servers; telecom equipment such as DSU/CSUs
and PBXs; and “headless” servers, like most Sun servers and
others running Linux and variations of UNIX.
As integral parts of a network infrastructure, serial devices are usually
installed early in the deployment of a new data center. By including serial
console servers in this early stage, system administrators can remotely
configure new routers and switches as they are added. If the serial console
server has modem access, the admin can accomplish this even before WAN
or Internet connectivity is in place.
